DIY Herbal oils & tinctures

This post walks you through the steps to make your very own herbal oils and tinctures using hemp as an example, but this process applies to any resinous herb, such as calendula which is a popular flower used in skin care. I chose hemp as an example because it is a popular natural remedy and I have received lots of questions about how to process from in both California and in France where hemp and CBD products are legal. Be sure to check the regulations in your country before working with hemp or other potentially restricted plants.

Cannabidiol, or CBD is one of many constituents derived from the cannabis or hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. CBD is an herbal medicina that, like many plants, offers a wide spectrum of benefits without the psychoactive mind-altering effects of THC found in many cannabis strains.

The cannabis plant has an extremely long history of use dating back thousands of years! Some of the reported and studied benefits of CBD include:

  • Mental Health & Relaxation

  • Neuroprotective Properties

  • Pain relief

  • Heart Health

This article "6 Health Benefits of CBD Oil — and a Look at Side Effects" does a great job diving deeper into the research on the health benefits and potential risks of CBD. So, if you're interested in learning more, I recommend starting there.

These days, CBD is found in thousands of products online and in stores for both topical and internal use. The quality, purity and price vary significantly so many people prefer to make their own products. If you have legal access to the plant where you live and are interested in making your own CBD products, there are several methods to do so. I invite you to check out these two articles about my process of:
